Cal Fire urging safety and preparedness when in wildland areas. Cal Fire has already been on nearly 1,600 wildfires. That's up 50 percent from last year at this time, when there were just under 1,050 wildfires.
A man from Mendocino County accused of killing his elderly grandfather and dragging him behind a pickup truck for nearly six miles is being evaluated by another doctor. Kenneth Wilkinson's lawyer telling the judge in his case the doc will evaluate the 23 year old next week. Wilkinson has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity for the death and torturing of his 84 year old grandpa Richard Wilkinson. The Ukiah Daily Journal reports cops called out to a home in Willits last March after family members couldn't find the grandfather. His body was found down a hillside. The younger Wilkinson's lawyer says she's going to consult with experts about the case possibly involving synthetic drugs called bath salts.
Several people have been arrested for various crimes during a sweep by the Clearlake Police dept. along with county probation officers. The sweep in Clearlake and Lower Lake, in 16 pre-selected locations created from a list of people on post-release community supervision. Eleven men and one woman were arrested for various crimes, mostly drug related including possession of a dangerous weapon, resisting an officer, being under the influence of a controlled substance and parole violations.
A man in Covelo's (KO-Vehl-oh) been arrested for allegedly stealing a camp trailer. The Mendocino County Sheriff's Office says they got a call by the Round Valley Tribal Police. Tribal police say a woman called saying she had the camp trailer parked on a piece of property but was told by a friend that a man had stolen the vehicle. The witness followed the suspect and the camp trailer saying Manual Rodriguez of Covelo took it to his house. Rodriguez was already facing charges of receiving stolen property and was just released from custody on his own signed recognizance a week before. Cops say they found the stolen trailer near his home so they contacted him. Rodriguez was arrested and booked into the Mendocino County Jail on charges of vehicle theft, and committing a felony offense while released on his own signed recognizance related to a pending court case.
The California Highway Patrol will be patrolling around this weekend and is encouraging designated drivers and using seatbelts. The Memorial Day Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) starts tonight at 6 p.m. and goes through Monday just before midnight. There will be tons of cops on the roads looking for DUI drivers and speed violators. Last year during the Memorial Day weekend, 25 people were killed in crashes across the state. Of those, nearly 60 percent were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
A judge ruled there's not enough evidence from a group who sued over a building project on Rattlesnake Island. The judge's recommended ruling say he didn't agree that the county didn't have good enough environmental studies before allowing the project to move forward. The proposed statement issued by the judge Tuesday in connection to the Friends of Rattlesnake Island’s suit against the county of Lake and the Lake County Board of Supervisors. Emeryville resident John Nady wants to build on the 57-acre island off of Clearlake Oaks, which he owns, but the group sued which put his project on hold.
